Best Accountants in New Jersey for Small Business Owners in 2026
Sam's List Editorial | 2026-07-28
New Jersey gives pass-through owners one election worth real money and one trap that costs them real money. The election is BAIT. The trap is assuming a New York paycheck and a New Jersey address sort themselves out at filing time.
Most accountants who are technically licensed to prepare your return have never made a BAIT election. That is the actual filter for finding the best accountants in New Jersey. Not the office address. Whether the firm knows the two or three state rules that move your number by five figures.
This list covers Sam's List vetted firms that New Jersey owners use, what each one is built for, and how to tell which fits your situation.
How We Picked These New Jersey Firms
Every firm below is a vetted member of the Sam's List directory with a live, verifiable public profile, confirmed against the live site on 2026-07-28. We selected them by fit for New Jersey small business owners, using the specialties, published client types, and founding year each firm lists on its own Sam's List profile.
The list is not ranked and it is not ordered by who paid the most. Sam's List takes no referral fees and no commissions, and placement here is not pay-to-play. Where a firm has a meaningful number of verified client reviews we cite the count with its as-of date. Where a firm has few or no reviews yet we say nothing about counts and describe the practice instead, because a thin review count is not evidence in either direction. All three firms below fall in that second group, so this post describes what they do rather than how they score. Reviews on Sam's List reflect individual client experiences, are not an endorsement by the platform, and are not indicative of future results. Confirm any firm's licensing and fit before you engage.
The Two New Jersey Rules That Change Your Tax Bill
Before the firms, the context that makes this list worth reading.
The BAIT election. New Jersey's Pass-Through Business Alternative Income Tax lets qualifying partnerships, S corporations, and LLCs taxed as either one pay New Jersey income tax at the entity level instead of pushing the whole burden onto the owners' personal returns. The entity payment is generally deductible as a business expense federally, and each owner claims a refundable New Jersey credit for their share. Rates are graduated and top out at 10.9 percent on the highest tier of distributive proceeds.
The reason this matters is the federal cap on state and local tax deductions, which OBBBA raised to 40,000 dollars. A higher cap narrows the benefit for some owners, and it did not erase it. If your share of New Jersey tax alone runs well past the cap, an entity-level payment still moves deductible dollars off your Schedule A and onto the business return.
Two catches. The election is made annually, so someone has to actually make it on time rather than notice it in April. And it is not automatically better for every ownership structure, particularly where owners live in different states or where an owner already sits under the cap. Somebody needs to run your numbers, not a rule of thumb.
The New York problem. New Jersey and New York have no reciprocal agreement. If you live in New Jersey and earn income sourced to New York, New York generally taxes it first and New Jersey gives you a resident credit for what you paid. The credit is limited, the sourcing rules for remote and hybrid work are contested, and the order of operations on the two returns is where preparers make expensive mistakes. Get this wrong and you either double-pay or you file a position you cannot defend.
One thing that is probably not your problem: the Corporate Transit Fee. It is a 2.5 percent add-on to the Corporation Business Tax, and it only applies to C corporations with New Jersey allocated taxable net income above 10 million dollars. If you are reading a small business post, it is not about you. Any accountant who raises it as a reason to restructure your LLC is selling something.
1. Crypto Tax Made Easy
Crypto Tax Made Easy is the New Jersey anchor on this list. Based in Little Silver on the shore and founded in 2021, its published client types are small business owners, venture-backed startups, real estate investors, and solopreneurs, and its named specialty is the one most generalists quietly decline.
Digital asset reporting is a discipline, not a checkbox. Cost basis has to be tracked per lot across wallets and exchanges that do not talk to each other, transfers between your own wallets are not sales but look exactly like sales in the raw data, and the broker reporting regime for digital assets has pulled this work from the honor system into matched information returns. A firm that does this daily has seen where the data breaks.
The practical read: if any part of your income or your balance sheet touches digital assets, and you also want a New Jersey firm handling the ordinary business return, start here. The trade-off is scope. A specialist practice founded in 2021 is not the pick if what you actually need is a large team standing up finance operations across six states next quarter.
2. Ursa Consultants
Ursa Consultants is a New York City firm founded in 2018, with venture-backed startups as its published client type. For a New Jersey founder that combination is more useful than it sounds.
Startup accounting has its own vocabulary and its own deadlines. Equity grants that need to be recorded before a priced round, R&D costs that now have to be capitalized and amortized rather than expensed on the spot, a cap table that has to reconcile to the books, and investor reporting that arrives on a schedule whether or not you are ready. A firm that works with funded companies has done all of that before rather than reading about it.
The proximity matters for the New York side too. A firm that files New York returns constantly is the kind that gets the resident credit mechanics right. The limitation is fit: if you are a profitable local services business with no outside capital and no plan to raise, a startup-focused practice is aimed at problems you do not have.
3. Bookkeeper 360
Bookkeeper 360 is a New York firm founded in 2012 that sells process. Bookkeeping plus fractional CFO work, with a documented monthly close and reporting that shows up on a calendar instead of showing up when someone finally gets to it.
Fourteen years of running the same workflow across many clients buys something specific: the close does not depend on one person remembering. If your version of accounting is currently a shoebox handed over in March, the fix is not a better March. It is a real close every month, which is also the only way the BAIT decision gets made on data rather than on a guess, since the election deadline arrives long before your final numbers do under the old approach.
The honest limitation: a process-first firm is horsepower you do not need if you are a side business with forty transactions a month. It earns its fee once the transaction volume and the number of accounts make DIY genuinely risky.
How to Choose Among These New Jersey Accountants
Match the firm to your most expensive problem right now.
- Digital assets are anywhere in your picture, and you want a New Jersey firm: start with Crypto Tax Made Easy.
- You have raised outside capital or expect to: a startup-focused practice like Ursa Consultants.
- Your books are the bottleneck and you need a real monthly close: a process-driven firm like Bookkeeper 360.
Plenty of owners end up with two relationships over time, usually a bookkeeping engagement plus a tax and advisory one. That is normal, and it is usually cheaper than asking a single generalist to do both badly.
Five Questions to Ask Any New Jersey Accountant
- Have you made a BAIT election for clients like me, and when have you advised against it?
- How do you handle a New Jersey resident with New York sourced income, and in what order do you prepare the two returns?
- What is included in the fee, and what triggers an extra invoice?
- Who is my actual point of contact, and what is your normal response time?
- What software do you work in, and does it fit the stack I already run?
The right firm answers in specifics. Vague answers about full-service capability are your signal to keep looking.
You can compare these firms and others, with their specialties and verified reviews, in the Sam's List accountant directory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who are the best accountants in New Jersey for small businesses? Among Sam's List vetted firms, the strongest fits for New Jersey owners are Crypto Tax Made Easy for digital asset work with a New Jersey base, Ursa Consultants for venture-backed startups, and Bookkeeper 360 for process-driven bookkeeping and fractional CFO support. The right pick depends on whether your biggest gap is specialized tax work, startup finance, or a reliable monthly close.
Is the New Jersey BAIT election worth it for a small business? It depends on your entity type, your income, and where your owners live. The election lets the entity pay New Jersey tax at graduated rates topping out at 10.9 percent and gives owners a refundable credit, which can shift deductible dollars off a capped personal return. It has to be elected annually and it is not better for everyone, so it needs to be modeled on your actual numbers.
How are New Jersey residents taxed on New York income? There is no reciprocity between the two states. New York generally taxes income sourced there first, and New Jersey grants a resident credit for tax paid to New York, subject to limits. The sourcing rules for remote and hybrid work are the hard part, so this is worth handling with a preparer who files both returns regularly.
Do I need a New Jersey based accountant, or will a remote firm do? A remote firm can absolutely file New Jersey returns, and two of the three firms here are not New Jersey based. What you actually need is a firm fluent in the New Jersey and New York rules that apply to you. Ask the BAIT and resident credit questions above and judge the answers, not the zip code.
