What Is the 1099-K Threshold for 2026 and Who Actually Gets One?
Sam's List Editorial | 2026-08-31
The short answer: the 1099-K threshold for 2026 is more than $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions, both of which must be met before a payment app or marketplace is required to send you the form. The $600 rule that everyone spent four years bracing for was repealed before it ever took effect.
This confuses people for a good reason. The lower threshold was announced, delayed, partially phased in, delayed again, and then retired. A lot of guidance published between 2021 and 2025 is still floating around describing a rule that is no longer coming.
Here is where it actually landed, and the more important point that most coverage buries.
How the 1099-K Threshold for 2026 Got Here
The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 dropped the reporting threshold for third-party settlement organizations to $600 with no transaction minimum. The IRS delayed implementation repeatedly, then set out a phase-in with lower interim thresholds.
The tax law enacted in July 2025 reinstated the pre-2021 threshold and did so retroactively, treating the intervening change as though it had never happened. The result for 2025 and forward: a third-party settlement organization is not required to file Form 1099-K unless gross payments to you exceed $20,000 and the number of transactions exceeds 200.
Note the "and". Both tests must be met. Twelve transactions totaling $60,000 does not require a form. Four hundred transactions totaling $9,000 does not either.
| Tax year | Threshold that applies |
|---|---|
| 2024 and earlier | More than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions |
| 2025 | More than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions (restored retroactively) |
| 2026 and after | More than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions |
The $600 threshold and the $2,500 interim step appear nowhere in that table, which is the whole point.
Who This Covers, and Who It Does Not
Form 1099-K comes from third-party settlement organizations and payment settlement entities. In practice that means payment apps, online marketplaces, gig platforms, and credit card processors.
Card processing has always worked differently. Payment card transactions have no dollar or transaction threshold at all, so a business accepting credit cards generally receives a 1099-K regardless of volume. The $20,000 and 200-transaction test applies to the third-party network payments side, which is where the payment apps and marketplaces sit.
Some states also set their own lower thresholds and require reporting below the federal one, so residents of those states may receive a form when the federal rule would not have triggered it. Platforms may also issue forms voluntarily.
The Part That Actually Matters
Not receiving a 1099-K has nothing to do with whether the income is taxable.
The form is an information return. It tells the IRS what a platform paid you. Your obligation to report business income exists independently of whether anyone sent you a document about it.
This is where the four years of headlines did real damage. A large number of small sellers came away believing the $600 rule was creating a new tax on side income. It was not. It would have created new paperwork about income that was already reportable. Repealing it removed the paperwork, not the obligation.
Why the Number on the Form Is Usually Too High
If you do receive a 1099-K, expect the amount to exceed what you actually earned. The form reports gross payments before any deductions, which means it typically includes:
- Platform and processing fees that were netted out before the money reached you
- Shipping charged to the customer and paid straight to the carrier
- Sales tax collected on the platform's behalf, in some configurations
- Refunds and chargebacks issued after the original transaction
- Amounts later reversed or held in reserve
None of that is an error. It is what "gross" means. Your return reconciles the gross figure to actual revenue and then deducts the associated costs, which is why your reported income can legitimately differ from the form as long as the difference is documented.
The other common mismatch is personal money. Payment apps are used for rent splits, reimbursements, and gifts, and those are not business income. Most platforms let you flag personal transfers, which is worth doing throughout the year rather than reconstructing it in April.
The Other 1099 Threshold Change for 2026 Nobody Noticed
While the 1099-K got all the attention, the same law changed a rule that affects far more businesses on the paying side.
The reporting threshold for Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC, unchanged at $600 since the 1950s, rises to $2,000 for payments made in 2026, with inflation indexing after that.
If you pay contractors, this reduces how many forms you issue starting with the 2026 tax year. It does not change deductibility. Payments below the threshold are still deductible business expenses, and you still need records substantiating them. The filing requirement shrank. The bookkeeping requirement did not.
One more caution: the 2026 effective date means the forms you file in early 2026 for the 2025 tax year still follow the old $600 rule. Getting the year wrong is the most likely way to mishandle this.
What to Do If a 1099-K Is Wrong
Contact the issuing platform first and request a corrected form. That is the only path that fixes the copy the IRS already has, and it is worth starting early because corrections take time.
Do not simply omit the amount from your return on the theory that it is incorrect. IRS matching will flag the gap, and a notice generated by an unexplained mismatch is harder to resolve than the original error. If a correction is not available before filing, report the gross amount and reconcile it on the return with documentation of the difference.
Keep the supporting records regardless: platform fee reports, shipping records, refund logs, and any documentation distinguishing personal transfers from business receipts.
Getting the Reporting Side Right
Most of this is a bookkeeping problem before it is a tax problem. If your books separate gross receipts from platform fees and flag personal transfers as they happen, reconciling a 1099-K takes an hour. If they do not, it takes a weekend and produces a number you cannot defend.
Red Bike Advisors is a Wilmington, North Carolina firm providing monthly accounting and bookkeeping, tax strategy and filing, business and tax advisory, tax resolution, and forensic investigative services, in business since 2009 with a six-person team serving clients across the country. The profile does not currently show client reviews, so we are describing the practice by its stated services, tenure, and focus rather than by review volume.
Its stated focus is small business and medical practice owners, with proactive clients typically between $500,000 and $20 million in revenue, and it sets a $500,000 revenue minimum. That makes it a poor fit for a hobby seller receiving a single 1099-K and a reasonable one for an established business with multiple payment channels feeding the same books. As with any firm, confirm credentials, scope, and fee structure before engaging, and be clear about whether responding to an IRS notice is inside the fee or billed separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 1099-K threshold for 2026? More than $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions, and both conditions must be met for a third-party settlement organization to be required to issue the form. The previously planned $600 and $2,500 thresholds were repealed retroactively, so the pre-2021 rule applies for 2025 and later years.
Do I owe tax if I do not get a 1099-K? Yes, if the income is taxable. The form is an information return, not the thing that creates the obligation. Business and self-employment income is reportable whether or not any platform sends you a document about it, and the repeal of the lower threshold changed the paperwork rather than the tax.
Why is the amount on my 1099-K higher than what I received? Because the form reports gross payments before platform fees, shipping paid to carriers, sales tax in some configurations, refunds, and chargebacks. Your actual revenue is lower once those are removed. Report and reconcile the gross figure rather than ignoring it, and keep the documentation supporting the difference.
Did the 1099-NEC threshold change too? Yes. The threshold for Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC rises from $600 to $2,000 for payments made in 2026, with inflation indexing afterward. Forms filed in early 2026 covering the 2025 tax year still follow the $600 rule, and payments below any threshold remain deductible if you have records.
